Jon Campbell
For much of Jon Campbell’s time as an instrumentalist and songwriter, his musical activities were secondary to his 25 year career as a Union technician (Key Grip) in the Motion Picture industry. During this time he participated in a variety of recording projects as a session player and producer, (one project earning a Gold Record) and although many of his songs were being recorded and performed by other musicians, he himself was only able to make the occasional live performance commitment. Before beginning the work in the Industry, he was active as a traditional Irish musician, as part of Pat Sky’s band, as a solo Uilleann Piper, and as a tenor banjo and flute player with Ceili Bands in Denver, Baltimore, and Providence. In recent years, he resumed a schedule of live performance, in local venues, regional festivals and venues from Maine to Connecticutt, and in far-flung locations from Astoria, Oregon to Kodiak, Alaska, including recent wins in Maritime Music contests in Seattle and Port Gamble, Washington. He has participated in the New Bedford Working Waterfront Fest for 5 consecutive years, the Mystic Sea Music Fest for a half dozen years out of the last twenty, and for the last 5 years at the Astoria Fisher Poets Gathering. As a composer of Maritime Music, he has had his songs covered by a wide variety of other musicians, including Tommy Makem, and Robbie O’Connell, as well as many lesser known singers, from Cape Cod, MA to Cape Disappointment, WA. He has been a recognized Rhode Island Folk Artist since 1982, and has been archived by the Smithsonian, the Western Folklife Center, and the R. I Historical Society. Known for his witty live performances, he works with accompianist Everett Brown on fiddle and accordion, and has produced 3 CDs of original music with Everett and other folk and rock musicians.
