Otis Read

Otis Read has been writing and performing music since 1971. At the suggestion of Dave Van Ronk, the release of the indie album "Big Lost Rainbow" came about in 1973, a group effort of his first band, and Otis has never looked back. His passion has since taken him into realms of rock, blues, folk, American traditional, jazz and classical music.

Otis was the man behind The Cambridge Harmonica Orchestra", 40 blues harmonica players who took the Northeast by storm in the 1980's; the score for a stage production of James Thurber's "The Thirteen Clocks; and the music for "Sisters", a NEA funded modern dance piece. He also produced North Star Music's renowned 5-CD New England Music Collection using top notch instrumentalists on traditional instruments; he created the RAP-IT-UP program, a nationally recognized platform for inner city youth using rap music; and for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he produced a book and companion CD of Classic Christmas Carols. Otis also spent four years in New York City where he managed Manhatten's "Green" Nightclub and Activism Center "The Wetlands".

Recently while living in Italy, Otis was invited to perform with Emanuelle Ranieri at the Cafe San Andrea during the Umbria Jazz Festival. It was during the week between Christmas and New Years. So in preparation for the performances Otis decided to work up some jazz "flavored" arrangements of traditional Christmas Carols...and so the seed was planted for "Deck The Halls", his latest release for North Star.
